Biographical Sketch:
Frances Bright's younger daughter Mary Pate (abt 1811 - ca 1839) married John Covington Thomas, Jr. (ca
1808 - Mar 1868). Mary named one of her sons Henry
Brickhouse Thomas, which suggests she grew up in the household of her step father John Brickhouse.
Her children born in South Carolina were William M. Thomas and Henry B. Thomas.
By
1836, John C. Thomas, Jr. had moved to Alabama. Children born to Mary in Alabama
were Samuel Pate Thomas and John Covington Thomas Junior.
In 1853, John C. Thomas, Jr. returned to SC from Texas to sell land apparently inherited by Mary's children. 1853 Texas and South Carolina minors guardianship.
Census Data:
1810 -- The household of Thoroughgood Pate: He is age 26-44 and his wife is age 26-44. One girl is under age 10 (probably Elizabeth K. Pate) and another is age 16-25 (possibly a female Pate relative).1820 -- The household of John Brickhouse (Marlboro County, SC). Household residents
= 1 boy under age 10, 1 male age 16-26, 1 male older than 45, 1 girl under 10, 1 girl 10-16, 1 female 16-18.
1830a 1830b -- The
household of John Thomas, Jr. and his wife. He was
probably a son of John C. Thomas, Sr. who had a much larger household
in this census.
1840 --
Notes
John C. Thomas, Sr. and John C. Thomas, Jr. were in deed records in Marlboro
County from 1823 to 1830. In the 1830 Marlboro County census, John C. Thomas, Jr. had 2 adults (1 male and 1 female, and no children) enumerated in his
household. His first wife Mary was on a deed with him in 1831.
In 1830,
the heirs of Charles Bright dec'd deeded (for $5) 94.5 acres to the
children of John C. Thomas, who were probably not those of John C. Thomas, Jr.
